Abstract: Jean Piaget used the algebraic group as the prototype for structure in all of the sciences. We will first discuss the nature of Piaget's general argument before turning to it's application to the development of abstract mathematical thought. Then we will make several connections to recent research on college students' understanding of function concepts and explore the implications for teaching in the context of exponential and logarithmic functions.
